Alexis Pilkington: a Target of Cowardly Trolls

by

A Life Lost Too Soon

Alexis was a 17 year old high school student on Long Island. She took her own life this past week.

It is nothing other than a tragedy when something like this occurs. But with Alexis’s tragic death, there was a twist.

On the social networking site, formspring.me, certain individuals spewed hateful, personal insults at Alexis. After her death, some people, apparently with no sense of decency or respect, made personal, derogatory attacks on Alexis’s facebook memoriam page. In no way do I believe that these insults were what solely led to Alexis’s decision. Yet, the insults certainly could not have helped.

In my own experience in the blog world, I as well have been the target of attacks of a personal nature, though since my blog is not a diary(I do not supply enough personal details for people to properly attack me as an individual), what is written to me is easily brushed off. Nonetheless, when I see a comment that attacks me as an individual, it has an effect. Personal attacks are made for a reason; to get under the skin of the designee.

Every individual is unique in how an event in life affects them. I did not know Alexis, so I cannot say whether what the trolls  cowardly typed, in the safety of their computer screen’s glow, actually had an effect on her. Nonetheless, the mere possibility that the comments could have played a role in her death is unacceptable and deplorable.  It should not be, but it will continue.

In Newsday today, some are calling for legislation to address “cyber bullying”. This could be helpful, but for cyber bullying to truly be addressed, there has to be a concerted effort amongst all those that use social networking sites, blogs, etc to refrain from engaging in comments of a personal attack nature. It is not that straightforward. For example, if one person makes a comment on you which is perceived as a personal insult, the comment designees’  natural reaction is to return the favor. And sometimes the return comment ends up being more hurtful than the original one. This should not happen. I have been guilty of this before, as well, although I have never made comments of a malicious or vicious nature.

In memory of Alexis Pilkington, all that use the internet should try to remain civil and avoid personal insults, even if it was done unto them.

Cyber bullying is just another expression of awful human nature – like kids at school bully the one with acne and big glasses in the 5th grade or smth like that. Legislation won’t help and in addition it could help undercover censoring and monitoring what people say online, which contradicts with social media principles.
If you want to fight it, all you can do is be humane, act decently and promote such actions among people who surround you. And certainly do not pass by indifferently when you see bullies in action.

  2. bjohns15 Says:

    Kate,

You are correct. Also, if one does, in the heat of passion, make a derogatory comment, one should promptly apologize.

I did make a personal attack once(though it was related to politics), and I realized I was wrong, apologized, and now I and the person i wrote to are back on good terms.

I know of a pro-illegal blogger that says she insists on civility in her blog and yet she is the one who does all the insulting. When you try to defend yourself she deletes your post. She says her blog is a place where both anti’s and pro’s can discuss illegal immigration with civility but when she doesn’t agree with your views she attacks you personally and then as I said deletes any of your posts that show her up for the hypocrite that she is.

According to her most anti’s, tea partiers, Republicans and other conservatives are racists and have violent tendencies. She absolutely cannot tolerate a different point of view without demonizing those who express them.

  4. Diogo Says:

Bryan, i’m a blogger and I wanted to write about this same topic after hearing about Alexis Pilkington through Digg. Can I quote a few things from your post on to mine?
    Critical&Technical.

  5. cookie Says:

Bryan, although as most pro-illegals object to the correct and legal term for those in our country illegally, I have never heard this blogger say that was the reason she deletes posts. No, you would have to know this vile woman as I have for many years now to know that she just can’t tolerate another point of view, hurls insults left and right which is in direct conflict with her mission statement. I had always been civil in her blog and only in defense of her initial insults did I ever hurl one back at her. She decided awhile back to moderate her blog and will not post any views opposed to hers save one or two once in awhile as her token anti’s I guess (so she doesn’t look the total fool). She also hates white people in general even though she is married to one (must have brainwashed him) and can’t stand this country being predominantly white. She can’t wait till her “browns” take over (she is Hispanic). She is the eternal victim all the time. If one Republican does something objectionable then they are all bad according to her. Same goes for the tea partiers, the MM and anyone who is anti-illegal.

She used to be a secret moderator in another forum before she started her own blog. You have no idea what a pathological liar and hypocrite she is. She is entitled to her views but not entitled to lie, insult and be a hypocrite. I am hesitant to disclose her and her blog name to you. I will have to think about that. Liquid knows all about her also. He posts in her blog occasionally but she banned him long ago also. Once in awhile she will allow one of his posts to appear but only to attack him.

Who is this blogger you speak of? I am not a fan of anonymity.
    ~

Her name is Dee, they hate her because she exposes the truth about them, just like they hate the Southern Poverty Law Center for the same reason.

    http://immigrationmexicanamerican.blogspot.com/

    • bjohns15 Says:

Ah, I could have sworn it was Marisa she was referring to.

    • Liquid Reigns aka Liquidmicro Says:

just like they hate the Southern Poverty Law Center for the same reason.

What was it that Bryan said about the SPLC, something to the effect their credibility is in question. The same is what is being said about Dee, her assumptions and allegations into topics are overzealous and do exactly what she is supposedly against, hateful speech. To Dee, its all bout the D’s are good and R’s are evil, Obama can do no wrong, etc. Every group out there is a Right-wing fringe. Dee’s problem is that as “facts” are pointed out, she denies them and turns them into racial innuendos of fallacy. She thinks she is some sort of journalist out to make a fallacious headline to be the next big story, to claim some sort of recognition to show she is the winner of the argument. She doesn’t like losing the argument, got tired of it, and began deleting comments that make her out to be in some way incorrect.

  7. cookie Says:

No, this blogger is a pathological liar. The only thing she exposes is her hatred for white people still being the majority in this country. She is hispanic and can’t wait for whites whom she refers to as “Mayberry” to become the minority in this country. She is a typical ethnocentric, racist who advocates for illegal immigration from south of our border so that our country will become more hispanicized.

I used to post in another forum which closed because of her outright lies and insults to anyone who didn’t agree with her agenda so she started her own blog. She allowed us anti’s to post for awhile and then when she couldn’t win an argument with us she resorted to insults herself and then deleted our posts and then banned all but one of us. She still insults this poor guy in there and he is a very intelligent poster who always remains civil. She allows an occasional anti point of view but of course she still feels the need to insult them for their point of view.

She posts topic headings that are outright lies all the time. This militia group that was caught recently she claimed were tea partiers right in her topic heading. There is no evidence whatsoever that they were members of the tea party movement and in fact even the media have denied it. She calls any white people who are not pro-amnesty “haters, racists”, etc. that would include anyone who is conservative and/or Republican.

As for Evelyn she is half white and half native indian but claims that all white people are here illegally and that ALL of our ancestors committted genocide against the native indians long ago (doesn’t that mean that hers did also then)? She only identifies with her native indian side and has a deap seated hatred for white people also. She is another one that hates Republicans and anyone else who doesn’t agree with her illegal immigration views and calls them racists for that. She also claims that the mestizos from Mexico have every right to roam over this entire continent without permission from the U.S. goverment just because of their native indian roots (even though their tribes never lived this far north).

In other words, these two hateful women are two peas in a pod. Full of hatred and racism. Are these the kinds of people you want to align yourself with, Bryan? Unfortunately, many of the hispanics on the pro-illegal side share their reconquista, racists views and you are aligning yourself with them as a white man and as an American?

    • bjohns15 Says:

      Cookie,

I do not align myself with anyone. Again, I suggest that if you are disappointed with many of the blogs out there, you should create your own blog.

  8. cookie Says:

Author’s note: Normally, the kind of comment that follows falls under my loose comment policy of being deletable for personal insults, like “you are a foolish white man” and “you are…a self hating, bleeding heart, liberal white man”, but I think this comment reveals how far one will leap from facts to theory because of an irrational fear.

Yes, you are aligning yourself with these ethnocentric, racist, reconquista’s Bryan by virtue of wanting their illegal counterparts to gain permanent residency via amnesty in this country. They want their numbers increased so they can gain political and cultural control in this country. You are a foolish white man to not see it and even aid and abet what they are up to. You see the illegals as poor little peasants just wanting a better life without looking at the bigger picture behind the ultimate agenda. The illegals are just their little foot soldiers to help them achieve their goal. You are playing right into their hands as a self hating, bleeding heart, liberal white man. You are assisting in the destruction of this country without even realizing it and after they have no further use for you they will toss you away like and old shoe along with anyone else who is not hispanic, including white, black and asian Americans. They are playing you well, Bryan. I feel sorry for you.

    • bjohns15 Says:

      Cookie:

“The illegals are just their little foot soldiers to help them achieve their goal. You are playing right into their hands as a self hating, bleeding heart, liberal white man.”

For real? Please, this is nothing more than a conspiracy theory. I do not appreciate you insulting me personally. You do not know me, yet you dare to label me with the cliched label as a self-hating white.

Your unsubstantiated claims are evidence of a corrupted mind, full of irrational fears and an underlying disturbing fear of people that are not white.

At this point, as you have personally insulted me and are clearly not interested in any degree of objective analysis on the issue of immigration, I suggest that you go elsewhere to vent your anger which derives from a source I will never know.

And you wonder why people have banned you from their blogs? You cannot barge into someone else’s space, insult them, and then expect them to treat you with respect. The world does not work like that. Goodbye, cookie.

  9. Evelyn Says:

Now everyone can see why Dee doesent allow racist on her blog, they alwayse attack the messenger with lies, slime or anything handy.

They focus on discrediting the messenger by demonizing him/her because the message is based on truth and cannot be discredited without exposing blatant hypocrisy on their part.

My opinion is either way they are losers, whether they attack the message or messenger with lies and slime, the same way they attack immigrants and Mexicans with lies and slime they end up exposing their motive which is racism.

    • bjohns15 Says:

It’s also fitting that Cookie personally insulted me on an entry that was about the dangers of personally insulting people on the net. Go figure.

    • Liquid Reigns aka Liquidmicro Says:

And yet, Evelyn, here you are calling Cookie a “racist” when nothing she stated can be construed as racism. Cookie may have made assumptions and allegations about Bryan’s views, which can be construed as personal attacks, but what she described about Dee is dead on.

They focus on discrediting the messenger by demonizing him/her because the message is based on truth and cannot be discredited without exposing blatant hypocrisy on their part.

You claim only to be the messenger of anything you post, yet you gleen it from other blogs that you agree with or from other articles you take as fact. So, if you post it, you are no longer the messenger since by posting it, you agree with it.

My opinion is either way they are losers, whether they attack the message or messenger with lies and slime, the same way they attack immigrants and Mexicans with lies and slime they end up exposing their motive which is racism.

Do I call you a hypocrite now? Since to you, everything is about “racism” because you simply can not argue anything else, which is also Dee’s problem, it always ends up being racial.

  10. cookie Says:

Telling the truth about you is not insulting, Bryan. I struck a nerve of truth about yourself rather than it being an insult. Evelyn calls it truth when she calls anyone she disagrees with, a racist. Now she defends the truth that “I” tell? She has attacked over and over the messengers in the Hispanic Business Forum and in Marisa’s blog. What a hypocrite! Note, how she couldn’t deny any of the truth that I said about her?

I have no fear of people of color. I have a lot of respect for our black Americans and other miniorities that show loyalty to this country rather than another one. You had no reason to say that about me either just because I hit a nerve of truth about “you”. Don’t feel bad though there are many guilt ridden white people like you that feel the need to make it up to every minority on the face of the earth by advocating for illegal aliens. I just feel sorry for them because it is their children and grandchildren that will be the ones to suffer in the future by their parent’s misplaced compassion. I have nothing against immigrants who come here legally whether they be Mexican or otherwise. It shows they respect this country’s laws and truly want to be a part of this country rather than being a part of a sinister agenda.

As for Dee, none of us anti’s insulted her until she insulted us first and then showed what a pathological liar she is. We merely defended ourselves from her hatred and racism. Liquid knows all about this. He and I both posted in the forum that went defunct because of her and also in her blog. Liquid knows who the true racist was in that scenario and he and many others were banned also for just speaking the truth and defending themselves from Dee’s initial insults. Why don’t you read her blog for awhile to find out the truth?

Continue to stick your head in the sand, Bryan. Everything I have said is the truth. Every American regardless of their ethnicity should be concerned that our borders are wide open to any and all including terrorists and the stats are all out there about how illegal immigration is affecting our jobs, taxes and many other things. There is no way that we should reward people for violating our immigration laws once again especially of this magnitude and especially since there is an underlyiing agenda this time.

    • Liquid Reigns Says:

C’mon Cookie, cut back on the labeling (it’s not helping, he’s not Dee, Evelyn, Irma, or Marisa). Bryan has stated before that he is open to debate and although his views are based on his understandings of what he has read and understood to date, his views can be opened with a civil debate without the labeling. He can simply agree to disagree, but present him with a good argument and he may see things differently. The goal is to come up with more solutions that don’t infringe upon our Liberties while being fair to those we choose to allow to enter our Nation. Immigration Violators can be dealt with, humanely (which I know you agree with). Give Bryan an argument he can’t refute, and if that doesn’t change his mind, agree to simply disagree.

  11. cookie Says:

Here’s more info on the Lawyers’ Guild which you referenced, Bryan:

    http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/groupProfile.asp?grpid=6162

Even the Latino posters on Marisa’s blog like Irma have been very forthright about the agenda of the Latino activists.

  12. cookie Says:

Liquid, I am disappointed in your response. I never said that Bryan was a Dee, Evelyn or any of the others you mentioned. Those people are ethnocentric racists and you know that from your own experiences with them. Bryan is not an ethnocentric racist. I brought their names up so that Bryan could see the kind of people he is aligning himself with and how they are using people like himself to further their agenda.

I formed my labels/opinions of Bryan by his own words and thoughts and nothing else. He says I have a fear of people of color based on what? That I am opposed to illegal immigration and amnesty? You know that isn’t a fair assessment of me or most anti’s.

Bryan has done his fair share of insulting me in the Latina Lista blog so he is no innocent either. I agree being civil is the best way to debate but how else could I point out to Bryan how he is being used by these ethnocentric racists then to tell him how those who think like him become their pawns by their own skewered thinking?

    • Liquid Reigns Says:

Don’t be disappointed Cookie, a labeling onslaught of the other lowers yourself to the others position, stay above the fray (I know its hard to do as long as you have been in this argument and in arguing with those like Dee, Evelyn, etc). I know you formed your opinion of him, and I know what you are saying, as I have told Bryan, I agree with your core arguments.

You know that isn’t a fair assessment of me or most anti’s.

Your right, but hit him with the questions and have him respond to them: I have a fear of people of color based on what? That I am opposed to illegal immigration and amnesty? Then answer them with your position of those questions.

I agree being civil is the best way to debate but how else could I point out to Bryan how he is being used by these ethnocentric racists then to tell him how those who think like him become their pawns by their own skewered thinking?

Point it out in your arguments by asking him, then discuss his answers. Show him where he is incorrect in your opinion with links, and then allow him to either agree or disagree.

i don’t think immigration violations will ever be resolved no matter the outcome or laws made, but we can all try to get our desires incorporated, it all falls down to who holds the greater opinion in Congress as to if and when immigration reform comes up and its outcome, we can only hope it is our side and arguments.
