I was born. That’s more than two decades and I still don’t have a real job! Anyways, less than a week ago someone was much less fortunate than I. Marcelo Lucero was murdered by a gang of 7 white teenagers(one was puerto rican) because he happened to have a darker tone of skin color. The details are all over newdsay, so I need not repeat them here. Tonight, November 14th at 7 p.m. there will be vigil held at the site of the murder, by the Patchougue train station, to commemorate the life of Marcelo Lucero that was ended so suddenly and without reason.
The purpose of this vigil is twofold: 1) to commemorate the victim and 2) to make sure that the Suffolk County government does all in its power to ensure something like this does not happen again. In the past, many suffolk county legislators, including county executive Steve Levy, have implemented anti-immigrant legislation. Most significantly, the local police aided I.C.E.(Immigration and Customs Enforcement) in workplace raids to round up undocumented workers. Naturally, Undocumented people, who were victims of hate crimes, would not report incidents because they would fear suffolk police turning them over to I.C.E. This must stop. It is not the role of local government(especially law enforcement agencies) to enforce federal immigration laws. It creates discord in the community and can have potentially fatal results(i.e. Marcelo Lucero). Good day to you all.
